ELECTROLYTES: THE HIDDEN HALF OF HYDRATION

A LITTLE BACKGROUND

I’ve been an athlete all my life. I played lacrosse through college and represented Team USA in the 1998 World Lacrosse Championships. After that I was fortunate enough to play professionally, first in the National Lacrosse League and later for Major League Lacrosse. In 2009 I retired from professional sports, and shortly after that I launched my company.

Before developing Motive Pure, I considered myself a “water drinker.”

I resisted the constant messaging from soft drink companies to consume their sugary sports drinks. Like many, I thought water was all I needed to hydrate. On a hot summer day, after playing a professional game, I got light-headed and collapsed from dehydration in the parking lot while walking to my car. Through that experience, I realized that I had to take a closer look at my hydration routine.

LET’S TALK ELECTROLYTES

At the time, I didn’t understand how electrolytes play a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance in our bodies. Since I consumed only plain water and sweated out both water and salt (sodium chloride), I was becoming dehydrated from an imbalance of water and electrolytes.

Dehydration causes our energy level to drop; because of that, mental and physical functions can become impaired. Maintaining water intake is very important, but how do electrolytes help during activity? Muscle contraction is dependent upon the presence of sodium, potassium, and calcium. Without sufficient levels of these key electrolytes, muscle weakness or severe muscle complications can occur. 

After learning that I needed to add electrolytes to my hydration routine, I started looking for products that could help. Sports drinks were designed to provide both a caloric energy source and electrolyte replenishment. Because I didn’t want to feel full or bloated, I didn’t like consuming calories too close to game time — and definitely not during games — so I looked for a simple way to consume electrolytes without calories. 

After looking at the zero-calorie “enhanced water” products on the market, I noticed that despite what I was reading on the packaging, they often had only trace elements of certain electrolytes. I would look at the nutritional facts panel and see “0 Sodium,” which was confusing because sodium is the main electrolyte that we lose through sweat.

These products were basically mineral waters, but that wasn’t going to help me replace the sodium I was sweating out.


THE BIG IDEA
