A MESSAGE FROM JEN & DONNA

After more than a year of being shutdown, we were finally able to resume in-studio classes on Monday, March 22. For the safety of our community, we’re taking a phased approach to reopening beginning with our UES location. The other studios will follow in the coming weeks. If you’ve been away, we want to take this opportunity to officially welcome you back into the hot room. Yes, you’ll notice some changes:

  • Masks must be worn at all times
  • Studio capacity is being restricted to 33%
  • You must bring your own mat and towel
  • Showers are currently unavailable

And while it may not be ideal, our practitioners keep telling us that the trade-off has been well worth it. The thing we keep hearing over and over is how good it feels to be back. To be honest, it’s been an emotional time these past four weeks as we’ve been reconnecting with our community in-person once more.

If you’re still unsure about some of the COVID protocols, you can READ ABOUT THEM HERE.

If you’re curious about the new membership options, you can CLICK HERE.

WELCOME BACK TO THE STUDIOS!

As of Monday, March 22 Governor Cuomo has finally allowed indoor group fitness classes to resume, and starting April 1 our instructors will be back on the podium! Since the announcement, we’ve been scrambling to line up staff and build out the schedule, but we’ve also been fielding TONS of questions from our community. We cannot wait to welcome you back into the studio, and we hope this helps clarify things and gets you excited to return!

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH LIVE STREAM?

This is the #1 question we’ve gotten, so we figured we’d start here… Live Stream classes will continue!

For the time being — as we take a phased approach to reopening the studios — ONLY Original Hot Yoga will be offered in-studio. If you love HIIT, great! You can still find plenty of options via Live Stream; same with Vinyasa and Yin Yoga. And even Original Hot Yoga. We know that some people may not be ready to return to the studios just yet, so please continue to utilize Live Streaming. It has become a key piece to our business over the past year, and we intend to take it with us into this new normal.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT IN-STUDIO OFFERINGS?

For the time being, we’re focusing just on our Upper East Side studio. There are lots of moving pieces, and because of that, we need to take a systematic approach to the reopening. Once things are settled there, we will turn our attention to the other locations. Right now there are three key offerings:

  • SELF PRACTICE SESSIONS – At the moment we’re using the North Studio for something we call Self-Practice Sessions. Each slot is capped at just 4 people, and an audio recording will guide practitioners through the 26 + 2 yoga series.

  • INSTRUCTOR-LED CLASSES – In the South Studio we’re opening up the capacity to meet the city and state guidelines (33% capacity = 16 people). For the time being, we’re staying well below that number (12ppl).

  • IN-STUDIO AUDIO CLASSES – Each day we are also going to offer a handful of regular classes without a teacher. These will also be capped at 33%, but done to an audio recording (either 60 or 75 min).

You can book a spot in-studio by CLICKING HERE.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT THE STUDIOS?

We are closely following the city and state guidelines, as well as the recommendations from the CDC. Please be aware of the following as you plan for your first visit back to the studios:

In-Studio Policies

  1. Masks MUST be worn at all times, even throughout your practice.

  2. Staff and practitioners must maintain a 6 foot distance from others.

  3. Socks are to be worn in the lobby and studios until you get onto your mat.

  4. Cell phones are prohibited in the studios.

  5. You may use the lockers, but showers will be unavailable until further notice.

  6. Please bring your mat, towels, and class essentials. Props and other rentals will not be available.

  7. Online booking is required. Walk-ins will not be permitted.

  8. For the safety of others, we ask that you arrive on time and do your best not to linger after.

  9. If you feel under the weather, we ask that you please stay home.

  10. There is a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel within that window, the system automatically deducts the class from your account.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE MASKS?

We know! It seems crazy to practice in a mask, but honestly it’s not that bad. We’ve found that the lightweight, surgical masks offer the best airflow, and many of our practitioners have commented that they forgot all about the mask by the time they got to Eagle Pose. There are even Silicone Mask Inserts available on Amazon for just a couple of bucks that help keep them cool.

WHAT ABOUT MY MEMBERSHIP?

This is probably the #2 question, and for good reason… We’ve spoken with many of our practitioners, and the thing we kept hearing over and over again is the need for flexibility. Some people have moved away, others will be working remotely for the foreseeable future (maybe forever). People didn’t want to pay for unlimited classes if they weren’t going to be able to take advantage of those benefits. Couple that with the limited capacity restrictions, and we realized the Prime Membership just didn’t make sense anymore.

Allow us to introduce you to our new All-Access Membership!

For a monthly fee of $89, you’ll get all of these great benefits:

  • Priority 10-Day Booking
  • 25% OFF in-studio classes and packages
  • 15% OFF all merchandise
  • Plus UNLIMITED Live Stream Classes

For a limited time, get your first month of All-Access for just $49. You can CLICK HERE TO BECOME A MEMBER.

DO I NEED TO BECOME A MEMBER?

Absolutely not!

The All-Access Membership offers some terrific perks — especially if you’re going to maintain a regular practice — but you’re also free to just purchase a Single Class, or a 5 or 10-Pack of Classes. You can do that right here on the website by logging into your account, or by downloading our sleek, new app.

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER STUDIOS?

There is no specific timeline yet, but know that we are just as anxious as you are to get things back to a normal routine. We will continue to keep you updated via e-mail, website, and social media. In the meantime, we hope you’ll join us at Upper East. The ventilation system has been upgraded, and they’ve never looked better.

Now all we need is the community!

YOGA & AYURVEDA

Next month our very own Chrystine Cooper will host a four-week workshop titled “Yoga, Ayurveda, and You.” It starts Sunday, April 11 and runs for four Sundays, culminating in a 90-minute Original Hot Yoga class focused on integrating Ayurvedic concepts to help deepen your practice. It’s a beautiful way to bring new perspective to the 26 + 2 Series. But of course, the question many of you may be asking…

WHAT EXACTLY IS AYURVEDA?

Ayurvedic Medicine (“Ayurveda” for short) is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. It originated in India more than 3,000 years ago, and stems from two Sanskrit words: ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Together it roughly translates to “knowledge of life,” encouraging natural therapies meant to strike a balance between body, mind, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health, rather than fight disease.

Think of it as the original wellness plan, a preventative approach to good health and happiness.

THE PHILOSOPHY

Those who practice Ayurveda believe every person is made up of five basic elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water, earth. They combine in the human body to form three life forces, called doshas. Together, they control how your body works. There is Vata dosha (space and air), Pitta dosha (fire and water), and Kapha dosha (water and earth). It is believed that everyone inherits a unique mix of the three, but that one is typically stronger than the other. By understanding your unique dosha, you can gain a better understanding of yourself.

DEEPENING YOUR YOGA PRACTICE

Both Ayurveda and Yoga are ancient forms of medicine intended to keep the body vibrant, energized, and balanced. In this four-week workshop, Chrystine will introduce you to these key concepts and help you discover your unique dosha. She’ll then demonstrate ways to integrate this knowledge into your practice, as a way of deepening your connecting to the traditional 26 postures found in the Original Hot Yoga Series.

Chrystine invites you to join her for this special four-week workshop.

PANDEMIC PARTNERSHIP

Two years ago, Live Streaming wasn’t even on our radar. But then the pandemic hit and we went virtual basically overnight. Now, exactly 12 months after we shut down we have a robust Live Stream schedule, an incredible On-Demand Library, and a beautiful, new website to house both of those platforms. We’ve worked hard to keep our community together, and have even found ways to broaden that community.

“We’ve retained a core group with auto-renews and annual memberships. Plus, we’ve met new people worldwide, including Germany, London, and two sisters split between Boston and Seattle. They miss each other terribly—but the virtual platform allows them to practice together.” — Jen Lobo, co-founder, bodē nyc

Virtual has opened many doors for us. Of course, it doesn’t replace being in the same room—but we’ve acknowledged the reality that people want more flexibility moving forward. We believe virtual classes will continue to play a role even as we look to resume in-person classes this spring. Check out the video about how our partnership with Mindbody has deepened over the past 12 months, as we strive to serve our clients better.

ELECTROLYTES: THE HIDDEN HALF OF HYDRATION

Guest Post by Jesse Hubbard (Founder of Motive Pure)

A LITTLE BACKGROUND

I’ve been an athlete all my life. I played lacrosse through college and represented Team USA in the 1998 World Lacrosse Championships. After that I was fortunate enough to play professionally, first in the National Lacrosse League and later for Major League Lacrosse. In 2009 I retired from professional sports, and shortly after that I launched my company.

Before developing Motive Pure, I considered myself a “water drinker.”

I resisted the constant messaging from soft drink companies to consume their sugary sports drinks. Like many, I thought water was all I needed to hydrate. On a hot summer day, after playing a professional game, I got light-headed and collapsed from dehydration in the parking lot while walking to my car. Through that experience, I realized that I had to take a closer look at my hydration routine.

LET’S TALK ELECTROLYTES

At the time, I didn’t understand how electrolytes play a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance in our bodies. Since I consumed only plain water and sweated out both water and salt (sodium chloride), I was becoming dehydrated from an imbalance of water and electrolytes.

Dehydration causes our energy level to drop; because of that, mental and physical functions can become impaired. Maintaining water intake is very important, but how do electrolytes help during activity? Muscle contraction is dependent upon the presence of sodium, potassium, and calcium. Without sufficient levels of these key electrolytes, muscle weakness or severe muscle complications can occur.

After learning that I needed to add electrolytes to my hydration routine, I started looking for products that could help. Sports drinks were designed to provide both a caloric energy source and electrolyte replenishment. Because I didn’t want to feel full or bloated, I didn’t like consuming calories too close to game time — and definitely not during games — so I looked for a simple way to consume electrolytes without calories.

After looking at the zero-calorie “enhanced water” products on the market, I noticed that despite what I was reading on the packaging, they often had only trace elements of certain electrolytes. I would look at the nutritional facts panel and see “0 Sodium,” which was confusing because sodium is the main electrolyte that we lose through sweat.

These products were basically mineral waters, but that wasn’t going to help me replace the sodium I was sweating out.

THE BIG IDEA

The idea behind Motive Pure was to provide a zero-calorie electrolyte solution that mixes easily with water and contains a functional amount of electrolytes (sodium, chloride, and potassium) that help our bodies absorb the water that we drink and help replace any electrolytes lost while sweating.

Motive Pure is perfect for the conditions of hot yoga, given the sweat loss that takes place and the need to replace both water and electrolytes. While Motive Pure is designed to be mixed with water, our 1 oz Mini bottles can also be taken as a shot in concentrated form in between sips of water. (This is actually how Jen Lobo prefers it.)

“My favorite product for hydration is Motive Pure. It comes in a little bottle that you can pour into water, but I prefer to take it as a shot before and after my classes. I forgot to take it once before class, and I ended up with a dehydration headache. It’s also great for my three active boys.” — Jen Lobo, Co-Founder of bodē nyc

A LIMITED-TIME OFFER

The studios will continue to offer Motive Pure to its clients once studios open back up, but in the meantime, we have a special online offer. Now through the end of March, Motive Pure is offering bodē clients a buy-one-get-one-free promotion on a one-time order of the Variety Pack, which includes two 1 oz Mini Bottles in each of the six flavors.

DO I HAVE TO WEAR A MASK?

The short answer is YES, but since we’ve been getting a lot of questions recently we thought we’d use the bodē blog to set the record straight.

DO MASKS REALLY WORK?

Since last February there has been a lot of confusion and misinformation about the importance of masks, but at this point the data is clear — proper mask usage minimizes the spread of COVID-19. Surprisingly, what type of mask you wear matters less than consistency. N95 masks offer the best protection, but the government has continually asked that those be reserved for front-line workers. That leaves a couple of options for the rest of us: surgical masks, which are loose -fitting and disposable, and cloth masks, preferably multi-layered. The goal with each of these is to trap respiratory droplets that are released when the wearer talks, coughs, or sneezes. They also protect the wearer from inhaling droplets released by others.

** Please note that due to New York State guidelines, gaiters and masks with vents can not be worn in any fitness facility.

The key, of course, is consistency. Make sure you’re wearing the mask properly (all the way up over your nose), and that you’re washing those cloth masks after every use. The Mayo Clinic offers a wealth of knowledge on the subject. You can read more by CLICKING HERE.

DO I HAVE TO WEAR A MASK WHEN I PRACTICE?

Back in October we launched our Self-Practice Sessions as a way of helping our practitioners return to the hot room. While the City of New York allowed gyms and other fitness clubs to reopen at 25% capacity, “indoor group fitness” was left out in the cold. Nearly a year after the mandated shutdown of all non-essential businesses, yoga studios and other boutique fitness brands here in NYC are still not allowed to resume “indoor group fitness” classes.

This has been devastating to our business, forcing us to make very difficult decisions. We introduced Self-Practice as a way of working with the guidelines to keep our business afloat. The question we get most often is this: “Do I have to wear a mask when I practice?”

The answer is yes. New York State is requiring all gym members to wear their masks while they work out; we are simply following that mandate. While we have upgraded our ventilation systems and are limiting the capacity in the studios, we are continuing to follow the science. The CDC, WHO, and NIH all agree that masks work.

We’ve found that lightweight surgical masks offer the best ventilation for Self-Practice. I myself have tested a couple of different mask options, and found the disposal surgical mask so lightweight that I forgot all about it by the second set of Awkward Pose.

WHAT IF I’M THE ONLY ONE PRACTICING?

There are occasions when a Self-Practice slot doesn’t fill up, and there’s just one person alone in the room. Several people have asked whether they still need to wear their masks in that instance. It makes sense, right? We wear masks to protect against contact with others. But the answer again is YES. Masks need to be worn the entire time when you’re at the studios. We have to protect our staff who have the difficult job of cleaning studio surfaces throughout the duration of their shift.

WHEN WILL THE STUDIOS RETURN TO “NORMAL”?

Most people agree that it will be a long time until the studios start to feel “normal” again. As we mentioned earlier, “indoor group fitness classes” are still not allowed, and there’s no way of knowing when Mayor DiBlasio will lift those restrictions. We’re assuming that when we do finally get the green light, some restrictions will continue to stay in place. Inevitably that will mean reduced class sizes and mask mandates.

We can not wait to welcome all of you back to the studios, but we have to assume that masks will be a part of our lives for a little while longer. How long? It’s impossible to know. But we are committed to the safety of our clients, instructors, and staff… and so we’ll stay vigilant for as long as needed.

WHAT IF I ALREADY GOT THE VACCINE?

We are listening carefully to what the experts say, and following the guidelines put out by the State of New York. As many of you know the vaccine is administered in two shots, and is deemed effective just weeks after that second shot. This is great news. The data has shown that the approved vaccines are all working better than anyone could have anticipated. Hospitalizations are down and the vaccine seems to stave off serious illness.

But while the vaccine softens cases for those people, they can still be a carrier of the virus. Simply put, that means that vaccinated individuals can still spread COVID-19 to others. Until there is data showing otherwise, we have to proceed with caution. All practitioners visiting our studios will be required to wear masks for the duration of their practice. The World Health Organization hosted an interview with Dr. Katherine O’Brien just a few weeks back and you can LISTEN HERE.

After nearly a year of dealing with this pandemic, we’re finally starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. We’re asking all of you to stay vigilant in keeping our community safe. Wear a mask and please maintain social distancing while at the studios. Do that and we will be back in the studio before we know it. If you have further questions, you can reach out via the Contact Page, or to book a Self-Practice Session, you can CLICK HERE.

HIIT IT HARDER

Last month we kicked off a Master Class HIIT Series called “HIIT It Harder.” It’s being held on Sunday mornings all winter long, and after its early success we wanted to really get the word out. To do that, I sat down with the instructor, Stephanie Sladkus, for a quick interview to help clients better understand what to expect.

CHIP: So what exactly is “HIIT It Harder,” and how does it differ from a regular HIIT class?

STEPHANIE: HIIT It Harder is a 60-minute, interval training class that combines 4 rounds of Tabata-style cardio with full-body conditioning. Just like the regular HIIT class we focus primarily on bodyweight drills, plus the addition of gliders. Adding gliders to an exercise makes that exercise harder because it challenges your balance and stability so you more fully engage your core. Even in my own exercise regimen, I found myself making quick gains as soon as I added gliders into my routine!

What do people need for class?

Gliders are the only thing you need (here’s the link to the ones we’re recommending ; they’re only $8)… But if you don’t have gliders, don’t worry! A small towel or washcloth will work great on a smooth floor; and we’ve found paper plates and magazines can be used on carpet!

What was the inspiration for this more advanced class?

We kept hearing from our a bunch of our HIIT clients who wanted to try something a little different, but still in the spirit of the bodē HIIT workouts. We knew we wanted to create a a more rigorous experience, and worked hard to create something to challenge those practitioners. Incorporating gliders, changes in pacing, multiple sets, and additional cardio really make HIIT It Harder a challenging (and fun!) hour.

What has been the reaction so far from the students who have taken the class?

The reaction has been terrific. Last week, a client said:

“If I were giving out awards for best new fitness class of 2021, the one with the gliders that you programmed would be my first choice by far! It’s so effective and so much fun. I love it! Thank you!!”

What would you say to someone who’s nervous about taking the class?

Come try it; I bet you’ll love it! Just like I do in all of my classes, there are modifications for every exercise. I encourage everyone to let their body dictate which version they perform. It is so important to maintain proper form to avoid injury and get the most out of each exercise, so I provide a variety of levels so everyone can work to their max.

Reserve your spot now!

Cost is $25
