NEW TO THE STUDIO?

WHO WE ARE…

bodē nyc was founded in 1999 as New York’s Original Hot Yoga studio, formerly known as Bikram Yoga NYC.

Co-Founders Jen Lobo & Donna Rubin had each fallen in love with the practice, and made it their mission to bring it to the Big Apple. What started as the first Original Hot Yoga studio in NYC with just a single studio in the heart of the theatre district has expanded to include two convenient locations with classes offered seven days a week. Bodē nyc has some of the BEST world-class teachers, some who have been teaching over 20 years! We are an incredible community who all believe in the power that comes from a consistent hot yoga practice!

WHAT WE OFFER…

The Original Hot Yoga series ( Bikram style yoga) (60, 75, and 90-minutes) provides the foundation for our weekly schedule. Also known as the 26+2 Hot Yoga Series, it’s a practice of 26 set yoga postures bookended by 2 static breathing exercises. It is lovingly referred to as a “beginner’s sequence” because absolutely anyone is welcome. No flexibility required! (Just ask some of our regulars.) Some poses are easier than others, but you’ll find that through dedication and determination even the most challenging postures can be conquered.

We also offer a handful of other styles intended to complement a regular hot yoga practice. HIIT is our signature cardio class — a high-intensity, low-impact workout meant to target the core. We also offer a Hot Vinyasa Flow, which focuses of fluid movements and more upper body strength. And finally, Hot Yin Yoga — a more restorative style of yoga mean to balance the effects of a yang practice (like 26+2 and HIIT).

WHAT TO EXPECT…

Yes, the studios are heated to 105°F… and yes, our classes are challenging.

Depending on what you’ve heard about the practice, you may be a bit apprehensive about your first visit to our studios. It’s absolutely normal, but there’s no reason to worry! We’ve been in business for 25 years and much of that success is due to “newbies” like you discovering the practice, and falling in love with the studios. We’ve got experienced teachers and desk staff on hand to answer all of your questions.

5 TIPS FOR A GREAT FIRST CLASS…

  1. Please arrive 10 -15 minutes before class starts. The teacher will welcome you and verify your information, set you up in a good spot, and go over a few details before class starts. It’s important to let the teacher know about any injuries or limitations. They will be able to offer modifications and guidance throughout the class.

  2. Online booking is required. You must be signed in at the front desk no later than 5 minutes before class time or your class will be given to a walk-in or waitlist client.

  3. Drink plenty of water beforehand, and bring a big bottle with you in class (1L at least is recommended).

  4. Eat a little something (like an energy bar or banana) about 90 minutes before class. Try not to take class on an empty stomach, try to avoid eating big meals.

  5. Wear appropriate yoga clothing, and be prepared to sweat. In addition to the heat, our classes (excluding Hot Yin) provide an incredible cardiovascular workout. The sequence makes you work, and your heart will be pounding. Plan accordingly. Women typically wear yoga shorts and either a tank top or sports bra. Men will wear yoga shorts, and sometimes a tank top as well.

  6. If you ever feel nauseous or lightheaded, simply sit down on your mat and wait for the feeling to pass. The teacher may help you get fresh air, or offer additional instructions. This happens from time to time; completely normal!

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS…

Should I bring my own yoga mat?

Yes, however, if you don’t have one, we have mat and shower towel rentals for a fee.

What if I’m not flexible?

This is the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are, but about strengthening your body and spine in all directions. All that matters is that you try the right way and go to your personal “edge” to get 100% of the benefits!

Why the heated room?

The room is intentionally heated to warm your muscles and allow you to work more deeply and safely. The heat also helps prevent injuries, and promotes sweating which flushes toxins from your body.

Is it a cardiovascular workout and can I lose weight?

No matter what your level of fitness, you will find the Original Hot Yoga class to be challenging. Each posture combines flexibility, strength, and balance to work your entire body. With persistence, patience and dedication, you can lose weight, and develop muscle tone and strength that might never come from other forms of exercise.

What are some of the benefits?

It reduces stress, increases blood circulation, and improves strength and flexibility. A regular practice can also help reduce the symptoms of many chronic diseases.

What happens when class is over?

At the end of the Original Hot Yoga class, you will be lying in Savasana on your back. Typically, a new student’s first reaction is to get up and leave the room as soon as the instructor has finished. But hold on! Savasana (corpse pose) is when your body recuperates and recovers. The longer you stay in savasana, the more your heart rate and breath return to normal. This, as they say, is the moment you’ve been waiting for. Take advantage of this meditation time at the end of class.

Do you have lockers?

Yes, we have lockers, please bring your own lock or we have locks for sale.
