with Jenny Mendez
Join Jenny for a fun and playful workshop breaking down the fundamental elements of arm balances. This workshop is designed for the novice and experienced yogi who wants to learn or improve their arm balances and understand how they work. Gain confidence and strength by relying less on force and more on body mechanics and body intelligence so you’re better able to approach the poses with mindfulness and ease.
This workshop will start with a short dharma chat, followed by a dynamic flow to warm up the body, and will include biomechanical drills to help students understand the physics of each pose in preparation to take flight! Time will be spent on breaking down the mechanics of specific arm balances below, with and without the use of props, while exploring fun variations and working towards more complex and challenging postures. The workshop will conclude with a “show and fly,” guided Nidra savasana, and Q&A.
Side Crow (Parsva Bakasana)
Eight Angle Pose (Astavakrasana)
Flying Lizard (Utthan Pristhasana)
*Make these inspiring poses part of your repertoire. Walk away with the knowledge to develop them all with a variety of techniques that can be integrated into your practice!
Leave fear and expectations behind.
Be ready to be challenged but not intimidated.
Work at your personal level, dive deeper, leave stronger.
About Jenny: Jenny is an experienced 200-hour Yoga Alliance certified instructor at bodē nyc. She is actively pursuing her 500-hour Yoga certification and is currently enrolled at Prema Yoga Institute in New York City, working towards becoming a certified Yoga Therapist. Known for her challenging and creative sequencing, Jenny’s classes encourage exploration and experimentation as she uses her multidisciplinary approach to teach a wide variety of offerings.
Jenny began her movement journey as a dancer in her youth. In her 20’s she began to incorporate yoga into her life as a form of therapy. It provided her a means to counteract the stresses exerted upon her body by her professional dance career, which included a prolonged tenure with Pilobolus Dance Theater. As she kept on with her practice, she discovered in yoga a source of calm that empowered her to manage the hustle-and-bustle of modern life. Yoga also became for her an endless wellspring of inspiration and a map to countless paths to self-discovery. Her passion to share the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga drove her to become a teacher. She currently teaches yoga in the NYC area, both privately and in group classes.

Our senior instructor, Yarrow Bucans has created this monthly series to assist in the development of Empowered Presence. Healing is an art form and this series will provide space for it to be artful. In a world that asks you to be anything other than yourself, Yarrow seeks to assist you in connecting to the authenticity of who you are, to own that power, and to use it to facilitate connection—with one’s self, with others, and with the world.
Through this workshop you will connect to your authentic joy, vulnerability, to your pain and trauma, and to your heart, allowing you to become empowered in your presence. Together, we will join to heal and navigate the complicated psyche of our self so that we are more able to connect and to express ourselves in this world—to grow into being empowered in our presence.
About Yarrow Bucans:
Yarrow Bucans is an NYC based psychotherapist, reiki healer, yoga and meditation teacher, and writer. She received her MA in depth psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, and has been engaged in the healing arts for over fifteen years.
Having spent years in a battlefield with her own mind, heart, and soul, Yarrow became a devoted student of psychology, yoga, meditation, trauma, addiction, and vulnerability. Through her intense emotional and spiritual work, and with the help of a light heart and humor, Yarrow has healed her obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcome addictive behaviors, and eradicated her anxiety. Most importantly, she has opened her heart, discovered who she is, and cultivated empowered presence. These tools have allowed her to connect more deeply to herself and to others. Yarrow seeks to help others to connect to their own empowered presence as well.
Yarrow teaches public and private yoga classes, provides reiki healing sessions and has a budding psychotherapy practice. To learn more about Yarrow, her offerings, or to see her schedule go to www.yarrowbucans.com.
This workshop will include:
and Empowered Presence
With this workshop, Yarrow assists participants in becoming empowered and centered, so that they may live authentically, bravely, and with an open heart.
This series will take place on the second Saturday of every month at bodē nyc’s UES location from 2-4pm. While it is not necessary to attend every session, they will build on one another, so it is recommended to attend them all if possible. This is a chance to come together, build community and help each other to heal.
Please note that while the room will not be heated our studios carry residual heat, so you may want to dress in light clothing and have a change of clothes with you.
Work to develop tools to identify what’s in your control and how to gain ownership to feel empowered. Through BRFWA (breathe, relax, feel, watch, allow), yoga, mediation and pranayama, you’ll learn to manage stress levels and improve your overall health. Students will also participate in a brief yoga nidra to experience the healing benefits.

At bodē nyc™ we strongly believe that every person who starts their practice with us should feel as comfortable as possible. We understand that as a first-timer you may feel apprehensive and not know what to expect. This is completely normal. It is with this in mind, that we have developed a comprehensive Private Class program that caters to every level and every body, including more advanced students, or those wanting to dig deeper into an existing practice.
For New Yogis
This private is designed for anyone who has never tried yoga or Hot Yoga before.
Our experienced teachers will give you a general understanding of the benefits of yoga and walk you through the Bikram Method series of postures. The instructor will address any individual concerns you may have whether it be due to a physical limitation from injury or concerns about the heat in the room. Based on your personal needs, you will be given modifications of postures (if needed) as well as tips on how to handle the heat in the regular group class.
The New Yogi private session will only be moderately heated in order for you to be comfortable and adapt to the feeling of the heat while working through the postures. After you have attended one New Yogi private session you will most likely be ready to attend a regular class. However, based on your personal needs, you and your instructor may decide that another private session could be beneficial.
Instructors available (or ask us to recommend someone in the contact form): Blayne, Eddie, Omri, Olivia, John Mabry, Sandra, Lesley, Maura, Pamela, Maja, Regina, Yarrow, Yanina, Kyla, Janet, Peni, Christopher, Kiara, Dionne P, Mark, Corrine, Mary, Dan, Dionne M, Kathryn, Emily V, John Mabry, Riji, Debbie, Jen, Donna
Grow Your Practice
This private is recommended for yogis who have been practicing for a while and feel they might be doing some postures incorrectly or that they’re not getting the full benefits of a particular pose. Our teachers do their best to give individual and group corrections, however, it will never be the same as a one-on-one session where you have the ability to address all of your concerns. You may also need certain modifications that are specific your own body.
In group classes the direction from the teacher is more on a general level and by practicing regularly you will in time understand how to do all the poses properly. However, in just one private session you will reduce that time and make quicker progress. With more confidence in your ability to perform the postures correctly, you will be that much closer to experiencing and enjoying the true benefits of yoga such as the meditative benefits.
Instructors available (or ask us to recommend someone in the contact form): Blayne, Eddie, Omri, Olivia, John Mabry, Peni, Sandra, Joseph, Lesley, Maura, Pamela, Maja, Regina, Yarrow, Yanina, Kyla, Christopher, Kiara, Dionne P, Mark, Corrine, Mary, Dan, Dionne M, Kathryn, Emily V, Riji, Blayne, Debbie, Jen, Donna

You will be instructed by one of our more senior teachers or yoga champions who can teach you how to prepare for some of the advanced postures in the series. After your session you will be able to work on some of the advanced postures in class that will satisfy your desire to be more challenged. You will also feel more comfortable to join one of our intermediate classes.

– Swami Vivekananda, Karma Yoga: The Yoga of Action.
The bodē nyc™ Karma Program is inspired by Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga is the Yoga of work and action, as a spiritual offering without attachment to results or hoarding the benefits for oneself. We come together every day to practice Hatha Yoga, sometimes with as many as 40 strangers. As we continue to practice we learn that we have something very powerful in common: a quest for our best self.
Our Karma Yoga Program is looking for like-minded yogis interested in nurturing a positive and mindful environment at bodē nyc™ through work and action. We also understand that yoga can be a luxury that not everyone can afford and this programs allows those who deeply desire to improve their practice but are financially challenged, to still be involved and be part of the our community.
Karma Yogis commit to 3 hours of service per week for a least 3 months. These hours are spent helping around the studio in whatever way necessary: often cleaning, helping check in classes, and assisting the manager and owners with various projects. We require that you have practiced for at least three weeks prior to applying to the program.
Our goal is to create a “home away from home” where Good Karma is as natural as breathing. If you would like to integrate a Karma Yoga practice into your life; please fill out the application on this screen. As a member of our Karma Program you will become an intricate part of our family and be featured on our website so that you and the story of your practice can inspire others.
Do you have a passion for bodē nyc™, our classes and programs? Consider becoming a bodē nyc™ Ambassador! Our dynamic Ambassador program comes with a ton of perks if you are enthusiastic and passionate about the bode brand and offerings.
