Jen Lobo Plamondon, a native New Yorker, co-founded bodē NYC (previously Bikram Yoga NYC) with Donna Rubin in August 1999 bringing the hot yoga revolution to New York City. With a career background in sports marketing and a passionate athlete herself, Jen turned to yoga to cross train and keep doing the things that she loved outside of the hot room. She also feels that 26×2 series really fills her need for a hard workout and a great feeling afterwards.
“Keeping a consistent yoga practice has kept my body healthy,” Jen says, confidently. “I see so many of my friends my age undergoing surgeries for sports injuries, back and neck problems due to too much time in a chair, and I am so thankful that I have yoga in my life. I would never be able to feel so strong on the ski slopes, run without ankle and knee pain, and play basketball with my boys, without my yoga. And the best part, I am not sore the next day!”
While running any business in New York City is often stressful and always a struggle, Jen says it has been a rewarding career in that she has seen so many people overcome both physical and mental challenges through their practice at bodē nyc.
“When a person walks in and says they are not a yoga person and not flexible, I get excited because I know their life is about to change if they stick with it. The crazy conception that people can’t do yoga because they are not flexible has always blown my mind. How are you going to get flexible if you don’t do yoga??? We all lose more and more flexibility as we get older so every single person on this earth should be doing yoga. I certainly was NOT flexible when I started – I could barely reach my knees due to all the marathon running and soccer. Now I can put my hands flat on the floor with high heels on!
“The biggest challenge for us as a business is to convince people to come in and try and to try at least 3 classes,” she says. “People put all sorts of limitations in their minds (bad back, bad knees, don’t like the heat, etc) before they can give themselves the opportunity to feel great. When we can get people back 3 times, we know that they are already starting to experience the magic, and they will stick with it and find their optimum health and well-being.”
Jen is excited to be part of bodē nyc’s first teacher training and to share her 18 years of teaching experience with others this Spring.
Jen is married and lives in Tribeca with her husband and 3 athletic boys! Another reason she needs her yoga!
